Graduated with a Diploma of Merit from Spiru Haret High School in Bucharest, graduated in 1959 from the Faculty of General Medicine in Bucharest with an average of 10 (ten) in all 6 years of study.
A chief physician since 1973, Prof. Dr. Nicolae Constantinescu has performed over 8,000 operations in fields such as general surgery, oncology, osteo-articular, vascular, urological, endocrine, plastic and reparative surgery. He began his professional career at the Sanatorium in Eforie Sud and continued at the hospitals Foisor, Dr. Șt. Stâncă, PTTR and Colțea. Since 1969, Prof. Dr. Nicolae Constantinescu has been a scientific researcher at the Department of Operative and Experimental Surgery at the University of Medical Sciences in Bucharest, which became the Department of Clinical Anatomy after 1990. He became a professor in 1996 and a consulting professor after his retirement in 2001, working until 2011. He trained over 3,000 surgeons and introduced the discipline of Clinical Anatomy, taught to 24 generations of students. He has written reference works, such as Atlas of Anatomy at the Bedside (1997, 2001), Clinical Anatomy. Course Notes (1994, 2010) and Atlas Breviar of Clinical Anatomy (2018). For residents, he published the volumes Surgical and Operative Anatomy (2012, 2018) and initiated a series of monographs, including Plaga chirurgicala. Biologie si tratament (2014).
Scientific activity:
Prof. Dr. Nicolae Constantinescu obtained his doctorate in Medicine in 1971 with a thesis on bone transplantation, publishing the monograph The biological value of autogenous bone transplantation (1980). He was a co-author of two monographs and published 42 scientific articles. He conducted essential studies in the field of stem cell angiogenesis and myocardial adaptation to ischemia, which influenced international surgical research and practice.
He was involved in professional societies, holding important positions in the Bucharest Society of Surgery and being a member of prestigious academies and organizations, including the Academy of Scientists and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Romania.
Extra-medical activity:
Prof. Dr. Nicolae Constantinescu was a founding member of the Civic Alliance (1990) and of the Memoria Cultural Foundation (president since 2019). He was State Counselor to the Presidency of Romania (1997) and Consul General of Romania in Los Angeles (1998-2000), where he promoted Romania’s entry into NATO. He was active in promoting cultural and national values, writing articles and participating in public and media events.
Awards and distinctions:
He received multiple distinctions, including the Silver Medal of the National Academy of Medicine of France (1984), the Eagle Award (USA, 2000), the Opera Omnia Award (2008) and honorary titles, including the Silver Medal of the Académie du Devouement National (1992) and the National Order of Merit in the Grade of Commander (2000). He was awarded the title of Fighter with Distinguished Merits for his merits in the 1989 Revolution.
May God rest his soul! He left us a beautiful legacy, volumes of surgical anatomy and an indelible memory of a mentor and man of culture of choice!
