Prof. Irinel Popescu, a symbol of modern Romanian surgery, appreciated by generations of patients and life-saving professionals
Acad. Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu paved the way for liver transplantation in Romania, was the teacher of doctors who perform liver transplantation in hospitals in Romania today and created a school at the Fundeni Clinical Institute.

Acad. Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu is a surgeon at the Fundeni Clinical Institute in Bucharest and has skills in hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery and liver transplantation, esophageal surgery, oncological surgery, laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery.

The year 2000 is an important year for Romania. At that time, Professor Irinel Popescu’s team performed the first successful liver transplant operation in Romania (from a deceased donor). With the rescue of Gheorghe Penea from death, Professor Irinel Popescu introduced liver transplantation as a therapeutic method in Romania, moving from the pioneering stage to the stage of routine procedure.

Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu, chief physician of general surgery, doctor of Medical Sciences, coordinator of the Integrated Center of Excellence in Liver Diseases SANADOR, thanked everyone involved in the success of liver transplantation during this 25-year period.
