The Romanian Association of Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation joins, as organizer, the National Transplant Day in Romania – the XXI edition, which will take place on April 24, 2026, at the “Vasile Alecsandri” National Theater in Iași.
The event is dedicated to promoting organ donation, celebrating the lives saved by transplantation and recognizing the effort of the medical teams involved in the development of this complex field of medicine. The event will bring together approximately 300 participants – medical specialists, representatives of the academic environment, public authorities, transplant patients, opinion leaders and members of civil society.
By its involvement in organizing this edition, the Romanian Association of Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation reaffirms its commitment to supporting and developing liver surgery and transplant programs in Romania, areas in which hepato-bilio-pancreatic surgery plays an essential role.
The event takes place with the support of the City Hall of Iasi and with the blessing of the Metropolitan Church of Moldavia and Bukovina.
Important milestones for Romanian transplantation
This year’s edition marks 26 years of liver transplantation in Romania and brings to the fore the important role of Iasi in the development of transplant programs. In 2026, several significant milestones for Iasi medicine are celebrated:
- 25 years of kidney transplantation
- 20 years since the start of the program to identify and maintain brain-dead donors
- 18 years since the first corneal transplant
- 10 years of liver transplantation in Iasi
These achievements confirm the major contribution of the medical centers in Iasi to the development of organ transplantation in Romania and to the consolidation of the city as a center of excellence in transplant medicine.
Transplantation is life
The main objective of National Transplant Day is to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and the impact of transplantation on patients’ lives. The event is also a moment of celebration of new life for people who have benefited from a transplant, but also an opportunity of gratitude for donors and their families.
Transplantation means life – it gives patients back the chance to a normal life and transforms a gesture of generosity into a saved life.
